The historical origins.

Of Roman origins, the bridge crosses the Arno at its narrowest point, where in ancient times there was a ford. It is thought that, from the earliest times, it was nothing more than a wooden walkway, "Ponte sublicio", built towards the middle of the first century BC, after the foundation of Florentia

During the thirteenth century, numerous shops built in wood settled here which became a huge patrimony for the municipality, which collected the rents then aimed at the construction of other public works. Soon the Ponte Vecchio became the heart of an economy in full ferment: butchers, pickpockets, fishmongers, fruit and vegetables shops offered their goods in what became a real specialized market. wolf, bear, but also more exotic animals such as the camel, the panther, the lion and even the unicorn.

Evolutions and our times

Over the many centuries of its history, the Ponte Vecchio has been transformed several times, in a story of destruction and reconstruction that has entailed repeated metamorphosis of the architectural structures and significant changes in use, from the sale of food to the goldsmith shops, which have in the bronze effigy of Benvenuto Cellini, on the western terrace, their tutelary deity. glimpse of the Boutique from the Bridge The pursuit of excellence inspired the Medici government to use the oldest and most prestigious "passage" bridge with a view of the splendor of goldsmiths. It was for this reason, in fact, that Duke Cosimo entrusted Giorgio Vasari, in 1565, with the construction of the Vasari Corridor which, passing over the roofs of the shops and inside the noble buildings, with the exception of the Torre dei Mannelli, connected the Uffizi Gallery with Palazzo Pitti: two Medici sites of the time, two extraordinary museum complexes of today, the pride of the Florentine museum system.
It was for this reason, in fact, that Duke Cosimo entrusted Giorgio Vasari, in 1565, with the construction of the Vasari Corridor which, passing over the roofs of the shops and inside the noble buildings, with the exception of the Torre dei Mannelli, connected the Uffizi Gallery with Palazzo Pitti: two Medici sites of that time, two extraordinary museum complexes of today, the pride of the Florentine museum system.
